Love is what makes the world go around.

While I wholeheartedly agree with Immanuel Kant's rules for happiness (something to do, someone to love, something to hope for) if I had beaten him to the punch I would have placed "someone to love" above all else.

Love is so vital to human existence that babies whose other physical needs are met fail to thrive if they are not loved. We are so driven to love and be loved because that is what we are here to experience. Yes folks! The answer to the age-old question, "why am I here?" is right here on this page. You are here to experience lurve.

But, what is it?

Good question. And there are so many answers! Love is that dizzying, head-spinning, heart-expanding feeling you get when a romantic partner shares something special with you -a look, a word, a moment. Love is also the miracle of a life growing within you, and the nurturing of that life when it is born. Love is a battlefield.

Love is that connection you feel to another life - your child, partner, pet, or a total stranger.

Love is the cause of the ecstasy and agony of life.

Love is so inexplicable that for centuries we have been trying to define it in song, poetry, prose, building monuments to it, making films about it, photographing it, painting it.

People live and die in the name of love. Without it we are lost.

What is love?

Love is an element.

Think about it....

Before we come to earth we float around in the spirit planes - reportedly a place of great joy and love. Our earthly bodies are manufactured by what used to be an act of love (back in the dark ages before lust took over). As previously mentioned, babies die if they are not loved, even though their physical needs are met, so they go home, back to the place of love and joy from whence they came. For the rest of us who survive the early stages of life, the giving and receiving of love becomes paramount to life.

The film "Love, Actually" (one of my favourites) illustrated this beautifully with the line, "When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge – they were all messages of love."

NB - if you're a human being you need to see this film!

So, we are born through love into love - (if not we go home to love) and at the end of our lives our overriding emotion is love. Between birth and death is the quest for love in all forms.

We are here to love each other.

Love is so powerful that sadly, some people who have experienced the agony love can cause decide to never be vulnerable again, and don't allow love into their lives. These people aren't living. Yes, love can be painful, but the ecstasy of an authentic, intimate connection on any level, is more than worth the risk of experiencing pain.

What is love?

Love is the reason we are here.
