The Official Definition:

According to the definition of happiness is:

1. the quality or state of being happy.

2. good fortune; pleasure; contentment; joy.

Don't know about you, but I can't say I totally agree with these definitions! Let's see what others think.

What the sages say:

"Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony" - Mahatma Gandhi

"Happiness is not a goal; it is a by-product." - Eleanor Roosevelt, Former First Lady

"Getting what you go after is success; but liking it while you are getting it is happiness." - Bertha Damon

"Happiness does not depend on outward things, but on the way we see them." - Leo Tolstoy

Hello beautiful Port Vila from whence I have recently returned! In particular, hello to Kriz who gives us this thought-provoking definition:

"Happiness is a useful element that comes upon you to give you hope and success."

Rosie from the UK shares her perspective:

"Happiness cannot be defined or measured. It is individual to each person."

We thank Andrew in Sydney for these thoughts: "happiness is being accepted for who you are and being content with what you have"

Many thanks to Melisa in Switzerland who absolutely nailed the importance of authenticity with this happiness definition:

"Happiness is being honest with yourself and the ones you love, and doing what you really believe."

Nancy Nigh from the US sent in this pearler:

May I quote from Peter Marshall: If you "keep your heart free from hate; Your mind free from worry; Live simply; Expect little; Give much; Trust God; Fill your life with love; Forget self; Think of others; Do as you would be done by; Thank God for all your blessings; Do all you can for others without thought of personal will be well on you way to happiness."

Can't agree more with this one from an anonymous reader in Singapore:

" My definition of happiness is satisfaction with life, being satisfied with what you have and asking for no more.Only with that, will a person truly be happy. We must always remember that we come into this world empty handed and thus will leave this world the same way. What the use of having all the things in the world and leave the world with nothing, not even happy memories?"

Love this one from Lena in Hanoi, Vietnam:

"Happiness is my family is always strong. And others the same."

This pearl comes from Innocent in Lahore, Pakistan:

"what is happiness? happiness is a feeling. we feel happy when we are free from tensions and feel relaxed.when we love our lives and love everything around us we feel happy.."

Sammy in Canada contributes:

"Happiness is love and knowing about your life. It is being safe too. However, happiness is also misery. In order for one to be happy, they must be sad at one point in their life as well."

Thanks to Dave in Germany:

"Getting what you go after is success; but liking it while you are getting it is happiness."

Here is a great definition of happiness from Adair Cates of the U.S.:

"Happiness is being the full expression of who I am and sharing it with others for the common good of all!"

And this one from Debbie Happy Maker of the U.S.:

"Happiness is living in the present moment, having good memories of the past and looking forward to the future without taking away from the present."

Debbie follows up with:

" Hi Jacqueline,

Thank you first of all for putting my quote on this page. That is so sweet of you and very much appreciate. Loved reading about your life, thanks for sharing. I do go along with the quote,"Happiness is the absence of fear." When i realized what happiness really was and is was when I had about a quarter to name, but sitting in a room with my 3 daughters, playing a board game. Nothing else mattered other than the room was full of love and all the other problems would work out somehow. And they did. There was no fear.

You are are wonderful example of a happy person. Keep up the great work."

What is YOUR definition of happiness?

Most people will claim they 'just want happiness', but is happiness the same for all of us?

How can you ever hope to find it, if you don't know what it is?

Get clear on what happiness means to you, and then you will recognize it when it appears - you may even discover that it's been lurking in the bottom of your wardrobe all these years, and you just didn't know it!

Of course there are those that believe that happiness is a choice we make, rather than a benchmark to be attained (I happen to be one of them).

Whichever school of thought you lean towards, if you've never really defined happiness for yourself, it could be a very enlightening experience for you. You may find you are already happy, or you could make the alarming discovery that you need to make sweeping changes to your life, or your thinking, or both. (see mentoring for help here).

Take some time now to ponder your own definition of happiness.

Heck! Why not share it with us? We'll publish the good ones.
