Take Your Financial Power Back

Hi, and the warmest of welcomes to "Happy Life The JJ Way".

Firstly, thank you to everyone who took the time to contact me after reading my last newsletter, Light in Sight I love receiving your feedback and it's gratifying to know that you appreciate my efforts to keep you living life happy.

This edition's article was written with those in mind who have suddenly found themselves financially powerless. It contains 8 ideas for you to adopt and utilize to regain a sense of your financial power. I hope at least one of them resonates with you and those wretched feelings of powerlessness disappear as quickly as they arrived.

How are you sleeping?

Studies show the two things that mostly keep us awake at night are our health and our finances, both of which are currently in jeopardy.

We're doing all we can to keep ourselves healthy: hygiene, social distancing, quarantine. But when it comes to finances, many of us are feeling totally powerless - possibly for the first time in our lives.

Some of you might be humming along financially, not really affected by the pandemic, others may actually be profiting, but a good measure of the population will be in crisis.

If you are in financial crisis, tossing and turning every night as you contemplate the giant question mark that your life has recently and suddenly become, take heart. Here are 8 actions you can take to make you feel less stressed and more in control of your financial life.

1. Stop:

Stop worrying about something over which you have no control.

Ask yourself this: "How is my worrying and stressing and not sleeping at night going to change the outcome of this problem?"

Whatever is going to happen in the future is going to happen whether you have worried yourself sick about it or not. You have a choice here: continue to live in (possibly unfounded) fear of the future, worrying, tossing and turning and probably impacting your health, OR accept that the future will unfold regardless of your fear and focus on enjoying every moment of your nows.

2. Start:

Start appreciating this moment.

If you notice yourself starting to project your thoughts into some horrendous, fearsome future, snap yourself back to this moment. You are here, now. You are alive. You are participating in this game called ‘life’ and you must savour every second. Starting now.

3. Stop:

Stop adopting a mindset of lack.

If you continually remind yourself or others that there isn’t enough, you will find that there just isn’t enough! When times are financially tough we need to be sensible, but there’s a very fine line between being savvy enough to not waste money (which very wealthy people do with finesse) and slipping into a poverty mindset.

4. Start:

Start taking stock of what you have.

Focus on the abundance in your life and you will see it multiply. If you are receiving food parcels from your local charity, you have something for which to be grateful. If you have somewhere warm to sleep, running water and a change of clothes you are abundant. Start to feel abundant, even if you have to fake it til you make it.

5. Stop:

Stop paying for nonessentials.

Do you really need to pay for road tolls, pay TV, wine club, magazine and other subscriptions, etc.? Audit your credit card statements and identify any wastage that can be halted. NB. This is not about being unable to afford them – you are an abundant person stopping wastage - just as all abundant people do.

6. Start

Start keeping a close eye on your spending.

As I mentioned above, rich people pay close attention to their finances and do not tolerate wastage. They (and we) have better things to do with their (our) money. Account for your spending with a weekly or monthly budget.

7. Stop:

Stop shopping as a sport.

As someone not born with the shopping gene, it never ceases to amaze me when whole families spend their days at shopping centers. People actually shop as a family activity!

Of course, if you’re out there subjecting yourself to temptation it’s going to cost you! Then there are the morning teas, lunches and afternoon teas which all add up. The result will be cupboards full of stuff you don’t need and credit card statements you don’t like. Stay away from the shops unless there is something you need.

8. Start:

Start finding alternative, low cost or free family activities.

Your recent enforced break from shopping centers may have encouraged you to find non-shopping activities. Take a ball to a park or a beach, learn to fly a kite, go bush-walking or rock climbing (Pandemic rules allowing). The possibilities are endless.

Teach your children the pleasure to be gained from quality time spent together making memories in nature, rather than the materialistic fleeting satisfaction that comes in a shopping bag. If you shop when you need to, rather than as a sport, you will be very glad of the difference on your credit card statement.
